Personal Project Journal: September 27, 2011

I did some more research and found some pictures of floating docks and some links about how big to make it. With this information I decided to make my dock 8 feet long and about 3 feet wide, made of wood and super dense styrofoam for floats because it is cheap and won't fall apart or plastic boxes. I will use concrete blocks as an anchor.

Took a walk to my pond and decided that a floating dock would be best for the type of soil I have, the resources available, and the time constraints.

Turned in my rough draft of the Personal Project Proposal. Ms. Mastin reviewed it and told me what I needed to add like more details, naming specific resources, and what kind of presentation to make.

Future Location of the Dock

This is the location of the future dock. There is a submerged rock about 6-10 inches below the surface and when it gets really dry, the rock is exposed. Off to the left is a bunch of cat tails and to the right is another rock that is exposed and that rock is what we currently launch are boat off of.  This rock is not very safe because we have punctured 2 holes on the raft on it.

The Pond: Before

This is my pond before the dock. We are the only house so far on the pond and  have a small inflatable raft that my family uses.

Today I got the Personal Project Guide for 2011-2012 from Ms. Mastin.  Since the beginning of summer I had decided to change my project from building an Adirondack style camping shelter to building either a floating or static dock from a pond on my property. The dock won't be too big, only large enough for a few people to get in and out of an inflatable raft. Planning on doing a little research to find out how large and what kind of material I should use.
